Or is it? Look at how it keeps the snow off of the upper section of my rear window. TAKE THAT ANTI-WINGERS!

'Twould be interesting to see whether it has a net positive or net negative effect on dirt on the rear window.

parents Previa/Tarago back in the day had a wing that brochure said was to deflect wind down onto the rear window to aid in keeping it clear of debris

Wings useless on a FWD car you say?!?

I believe I've used this team's time attack vehicle in defense of FWD wings myself :D

Yea, wont see that on the street too often though.

if popup headlights were banned because of the impact they'd have on a pedestrian in a crash, I suspect a decapitating front wing might be also frowned upon

I'd imagine that stability at high speeds is pretty functional, js
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:01 |

I would tend to think it's simply less helpful than if it were on the driven wheels, but you do want weight on the rear wheels... if I were at highway speed I'd need new pants if my rear end just decided to walk out on me
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:04 |

I can confirm it is negative.
With my wing the rear hatch under the wing gets absolutely filthy
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:05 |

Exactly. I've never understood the hate. Sure, it's probably not as helpful as it is on a RWD car, but grip is grip.

At least it blocks some sunlight... I guess.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:08 |

But i you didnt have a wing where would you put your grilled cheese when clearing the window?
![]() 05/12/2014 at 11:08 |

I'd have to just put it on the car's roof, LIKE AN ANIMAL!

It looks cool

yes, many monies please

I believe so, other pedestrian friendly changes require a gap between the hood and the engine, something I believe the new GTR has expensive explosive shocks to accommodate
nope, appears that was Jaaaaaaguar http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/02/nis…

A big wing on an fwd car can in deed be functional. Especially if it's a hatchback, like the Civic pictured: these get all kinds of turbulence behind the car sucking it backwards, and these roof-mounted wigs try to counter this
As well as that, FWD cars can get too light back there too, which is just as problematic, as with RWD cars. Remember, how the first gen TT got it's small winglet back in the day? It got it because in high-speed cornering the back came loose.
So yes, FWD cars can has wingz too, and not just for show either. At least not if it's got more than a 1.6 with 90HP.

I sell cash and cash accessories, I am sure we could reach a mutual agreement regarding the required amount of monies.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 12:05 |

Yep. Very few hatchbacks these days don't have a little spoiler in back for all of the reasons you mentioned.
The one in OP's is still ridiculously oversized, however.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 12:11 |

Yes, this. The "wing" is just there to move the boundary layer further back and reduce the low pressure zone behind the car, reducing drag.

I also accept subarus of specific types and genres in exchange

Let's talk specifics! MR2 needs a garage buddy.

realistically, probably worth $5-6k. but when accounting for sentimental value, knowing I'm its second owner and basically its complete history, it being a certified used car before that, all my custom touches, etc etc, I would only let it go for something obscene like $10k.
Or for trade of a clean GC or Bugeye subaru :D

This^
![]() 05/12/2014 at 12:28 |

Yeah, it's a really nice car for what it is. I've been looking for Civic Hatchbacks as a commuter, and they can really range anywhere from 1500-6 depending on condition, I have seen some with lots of work or clean swaps easily go for more though. Sentimental value is real, no doubt about it.
Time to find a Bugeye to flip :)

A wing that actually has positive downforce affect can help with weight distribution while driving and it adds weight to the rear of the car since most of the weigh is at the front with a fwd car.
![]() 05/12/2014 at 12:51 |
|
new wing weighs less than the factory wing though, well not taking into account any aerodynamic "weight" added at speed
![]() 05/12/2014 at 14:09 |
|
http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/time-to-mess-w…
I totally agree with you. I was talking more about aero affects than the actual weight of the wing since it's so little (depending on the material used) in comparison to the downforce "weight".

The wing on my 626 GE hatch would actually prevent a tiny section of the rear window from freezing. Not much, but just enough to safely back out of parking spots etc.
